Background:
Rabies remains the most feared consequence of animal-associated injuries (AAI), despite effective post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). While the physical and economic burden of AAI is well recognized, its psychological impact on bite victims and families affected by rabies deaths has received little attention.

Rabies Survivors in India: Insights from the World's Largest Cohort

Background: Rabies is almost invariably fatal after symptom onset, yet rare instances of survival have been documented. Globally, fewer than 40 rabies survivors have been reported, including 21 from India. Additionally, nine more survivors were identified in India during 2023–2025 (unpublished data). This study describes the characteristics of rabies survivors in India.

Fox Rabies Variants: The Potential for Introduction, Re-emergence, and Host Shift Events in Texas

In 2013 the last case of Texas Fox (TF) variant rabies was reported from Concho County. There has not been another TF variant case of rabies reported in Texas since that date. However, there are legitimate threats for the re-introduction of the TF variant from Mexico and the introduction of the Arizona Fox (AZ) variant from New Mexico. Additionally, a South-Central Skunk (SCS) rabies outbreak among foxes is currently occurring in Central Texas, with probable fox-to-fox transmission and changes in monoclonal antibody patterns among some of the positive samples.

Rabies in carnivores not classified as reservoirs in the Americas

Separate from the identified rabies reservoirs are several additional taxonomic groups capable of carrying and transmitting rabies virus infections to people and domestic animals. These incidents represent an opportunity to learn more about RABV epidemiology in the sylvatic system. Transmission of host adapted strains from the reservoir species to other carnivores also represents a potential risk for the emergence of new RABV strains and the establishment of new reservoirs.

Factors associated with free-roaming dog ownership in Nigeria and Sierra Leone: Implications for achieving zero human rabies deaths by 2030

Free-roaming dogs (FRDs) pose a persistent challenge to canine rabies elimination in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), primarily because current parenteral vaccination methods are difficult to deliver effectively to this population, contributing to sustained virus transmission, environmental contamination, and public health challenges. We conducted cross-sectional surveys involving 4,161 dog-owning households in Nigeria and 2,558 in Sierra Leone. Country-specific regression models were fitted to identify factors associated with allowing owned dogs to roam freely.

SEROLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF RABIES VIRUS EXPOSURE IN WILD BOARS FROM A PERI-URBAN AREA

Introduction: Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are an invasive species widely distributed across different biomes, exhibiting generalist behavior and frequent contact with domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. Although they are not reservoirs of the rabies virus, they can reflect exposure to rabies virus circulation in ecosystems shared with bats and other mammals. Serological surveys are important for assessing rabies virus circulation, supporting epidemiological surveillance and contributing to prevention and control strategies.
